When I talked to Liz by phone early in May 1968 she
expressed her intention to take a leave of absence from her work at Martin
dePorres for several months, until September. This was apparently the result
of some recent developments in her work together with some introspection
of her own which led her to believe that she should get away to reflect
on her life and her work, possibly leading to a reassessment. She mentioned
that she would like to have our girls come up to spend a few days or so
with her at the farm in Elgin. Shortly before she was to come to St. Louis,
which was to be the first stop on her leave, I called Liz at dePorres House
and was told that she was at Cambridge House in Milwaukee and reached her
there. She told me she would be arriving in St. Louis on Saturday, May 18
th, on the G.M.& O. I advised her that Mae Jean was visiting in Memphis
and that the children and I would meet the train if possible. Unfortunately,
we were unable to meet her, but Liz made her way to the house and was making
herself comfortable when we got there. We took the kids out for hamburgers
and brought them home. Liz and I then went out and she provided me with
a general outline of her plans over dinner.
