Emigration |
EMIGRATION In a bold and courageous move, Andreas and Anna Stehwein, widow of Joachim Christoph Mangelsdorf, leave their homeland and bring their eight children to America. Five carry the name Mangelsdorf. |
|
In our search for the origins of the Mangelsdorf family in America, as we know that family, we ultimately come across a shipper living and working on the banks of the Elbe River in early eighteenth century Prussia. His name is Andreas Mangelsdorff and he lives in a village by the name of Arneburg. We believe he was born about 1710. It would be of great interest to learn of this man’s ancestry, but we are told that would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, as church records are the primary or exclusive source of genealogical records of this time, and churches and their records prior to this time were destroyed in the Thirty Years War. |
